culture there I was.
liz and i hit the opera last night and saw faust. it was my maiden opera voyage and it was spectacular. we were in the major nosebleed section in these scary seats that are "one-ses" around the edge of the highest balcony. one upside - lots of leg room and you didn't have to share your arm-rest with anyone. (the seats were so cheap that we didn't even get arm-rests) it's a fun show with lots of demon action. but the main dude had a mullet and that's just not right.

i have an extremely short attention span when it comes to reading. i drift off and start thinking about other things while my eyes are doing the exercise of scanning the pages while not actually reading. i have about 5 books under my bedside table that have been started and discarded 2/3 of the way in. i am however a fervent consumer of magazines. this might be why "the devil wears prada" is one of the only books i have finished in over a year. AND to my delight it's being turned into a movie directed by david frankel (sex and the city). this is my movie crack..... i don't need action, or explosions...ohhhh i can't wait!! Miranda Priestly, the evil magazine boss is played by Meryl Streep. never mind that silly little anne hathaway is cast as the star - i 'm not routing for her anyway. as a juicy addition streep's character is rumored to be based on the iconic anna wintour (editor-in-chief at vouge). author of the book, lauren weisberger was an intern at vouge.... so delicious i can hardly stand it!

we had a very nice time in warkworth last weekend. we watched a crapload of satellite tv, had good food, and went on more then one "nature walk." (and no, that doesn't include walking to the end of the street to go to the liquor store)

i watched entertainment tonight yesterday and got the tail end about a new hbo "comedy" about polygamy. apparently the mormon church has its sensible drawers in a knot over this series promoting a lifestyle that was banned 116 years ago. well i say ban away mormons. no one listens to you anyway. there are approx 40,000 people in the usa who are polygamists. and there should be something on tv for them! they can tune in right after season six of the sopranos and get comfortable on a wooden chair and laugh along with the patriarch of this family, Bill Henrickson. this series is produced by tom hanks (whom i will refer to as midas-touch-tommy) and is supposed to focus on "just how challenging life as a modern-day polygamist can be" (hbo.com) watch the show preview here. but what i'm going to like about this show is that chloe sevigny will have to dress all doudy-like (if you ever go to gofugyourself.com you'll know what a joy her outfits are)

team romania (see my go train saga in a previous post if you don't know who i mean) has decided that living in canada w/out her new husband is too hard. so last friday we awkwardly stood around the water-cooler and drank wine and wished her farewell. i silently rejoiced that the only person i will have to listen to in the car on the way home now is the CBC's matt galloway (the perfect man so says sarah) but...it couldn't be that easy no.... she left her fish. her fish is now mine. i was informed that i was allowed to name it "red" (wow thanks for the options there....) and it could live in my office. i hate fish. i never had a fish as a child - never wanted one. i don't find them soothing or cool. there is no one else at my work who doesn't have a fish on their desk already so i'm stuck with "red" - and "red" is stuck with me. red hides behind his/her little plastic tree...

last night on the way back to civilization i got a "verbal warning" from some parka clad go employee. apparently i purchased the wrong kind of train ticket and i needed to pay $3.00 more - he "let me off this time" but .... "next time you could be fined $200". FANTASTIC - THANKS!

FF to this morning - at the last minute i decided to bring Team Romania an activity to do on the train. (she just talks endlessly about nothing...way too much for me first thing in the morning). so, as the train pulled out of union station she started to prattle on about how she was up late dying her hair bleach blonde and i pulled out my ammo. "here - i brought this to read. i am sleepy still - would you like it?" ahhh...... 35 minutes of sweet silence while she caught up on kate moss' latest escapades.

so a few weeks ago i went to enjoy a tasty box of kraft dinner as my evening meal. okay... so stop reading if you EVER want to enjoy the fake cheese goodness that sustained me through university....

after i dumped the box in the boiling water a maggot floated to the top. gross. so after freaking out a bit (okay a lot) i swiftly called the 1.800 # on the back of the box. while i was being told that it couldn't have possibly been kraft's fault - the food was sitting near some other food that had gone bad. like when a parent says that it's not their kid that's the problem - it's the other kids... riiiight.

while talking to the kraft person another maggot climbed its way out of the box. gross x 2. they conceded to sending me $1.20 for the box. i've been waiting for three weeks for my whopping $1.20...

yesterday kraft canada leaves me a phone message... "call us back" they say... "your package was returned undeliverable" they say....

when i call back - the nice man on the phone wants to "confirm my address" they have my street address as 80049... MORONS, f-ing MORONS!

when asked for my street address i said "eight hundred forty-nine."

me and the ladies hit the spa this weekend. we drove up on sat morning and were rubbed, scrubbed and fed. i spent most of the day in a robe with post-shiatsu bleary eyes. hence the lack of wicked good photos of my ladies covered in "essential" oil hairline guck. ahhhh lets do it again next weekend k? heather was convinced that my parents small town was very much like her darling star's hollow (if it only had a town square!!!). vanessa was shocked by the -urm- thoroughness of her facial and while sarah made fun of our sunday morning "shopping" trip she found her arms piled high with tree ornaments and other fun stuff. thanks for coming ladies!

the lockout finished a week or two ago - but i was on vacation and i missed the glorious broadcasting return of my 'favourite cbc programs'. i sent Mr. Rabinovitch an email back in august telling him to hurry the heck up. i did get a standard form email responding to my 'concerns' - but then today i received another note. i opened it thinking that maybe the cbc would be so grateful for my personal involvement in ending the lockout that they would reward me with a coffee mug, sticker, bookmark - 14 foot gold trophy. but no. i got politely informed that i was going to be added to their email list. woo hoo. spam. thanks cbc you're the best.

my office is ground level. i have a beautiful view of the parking lot and a shipping dock. truly magestic. today was window-washing day. out of the blue there are two guys washing the window right outside my office. and they are having a very colourful conversation. i won't go into details because it's truly gross - but let's just say that there was talk of a lady's behind and what one window washers would like to - urm - do to it... the other one was very impressed by his colleagues vivid description and just kept responding "holy f*cking sh*$t dude thats awesome!" i just kept working away and trying not to look over - i did kamakaze this photo though

so, you might have already heard about this but.. the ontario science centre has just opened up a show called "BODY WORLDS 2" it's an educational show about anatomy. but the crazy thing is that these are not models. they are REAL people - check this out->i saw the inventor of plastination, Gunther von Hagens being interviewed on tv the other night - and he was explaning how he places the cadavers in action poses. they are still gooey and soft when he "moulds" them. urgh... did i mention that he has an indiana jones like style?

i work in oakville and i live in toronto. so that means about a 32 km drive to work every day. it's really fun (see above traffic crap). you know what makes my drive tolarable? knowing that once in the land of the big box stores i can go to a tim hortons drive through. it's the kind of thing that was only enjoyed on road trips or weekend jaunts to the cottage. but because i'm a commuter now i get to go every day. but this morning (after having a clothing dilemma that made me leave late) i swung into my local timmys and the drive through line was stoopid long. so i parked and walked in. excellent idea i thought, this will make things go much faster. and it did! until i got back to my parking spot and found my car blocked in by a woman driving a hummer. seriously, a freaking hummer! i gave the little "hey get out of the way" toot of my horn and she just did the palms to that sky "what do you want me to do??" symbol. grrrrr..... i don't know lady, um, how about pulling your behemoth of a freaking military truck out of my way? so i was late to work because i had to wait for her kid to come out of the tims (which only took like 2 minutes, but still!) before she'd move. amazing.

on Colletto Fava mountain side near the village of Artesina a group of austrian artists called Gelatin have built a giant pink bunny. the artists hope that the rabbit will stay on the mountainside for 20 years. they are encouraging people to climb it and look out over the italian countryside from atop a giant pink bunny tummy. the artist statement includes the line "i love the rabbit the rabbit loves me."

at queens university (my alma mater) on the weekend there was a street party that turned into a spoiled white kid "riot". over 5000 people partied on aberdeen st. the police made something like 35 arrests. the Kingston Police Chief Bill Closs described the scene as "a drunken street brawl," and said his officers were "subjected to the most vile and disgusting behaviour that a police officer could possibly encounter." WHAT THE CRAP? have you SEEN kingston? now i know that breaking glass and turning over a car is no sunday school meeting - but do you think that maybe these kids are ready to snap at the pressure of needing something like a freaking 95% avg to get in? if a kingston police officer sees a street party as the most disgusting behaviour possible then i say we should all quit our jobs and move to kingston-Shangri-La.
